Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus (Lisbon, 1963 and 1964) graduated from de Architecture Faculty of Lisbon in 1986 and 1987, respectively. They collaborated with architect Gonçalo Byrne since 1983, and started making projects in their own name in 1988. At that time they opened their studio in a space within Gonçalo Byrne studio. The visibility of their work has brought invitation to give lectures and teach in institutions like Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Accademia de Arquitectura de Mendrisío, as others around Portugal. With two offices in Lisbon, the Aires Mateus atelier establishes several partnerships with local studios for international projects.
