The Architectural Thinking School

A celebration of the end of the school year will be held on Saturday, June 24, to showcase the projects developed by the School of Architectural Thinking for Children. The ceremony will begin with a presentation of the books by the school founders, followed by the screening of four films created by the students. The event will conclude with a toast of lemonade for the children and a glass of wine for the accompanying adults.

In the System Thinking programme's book segment, consisting of 10 lessons, 42 students worked on creating their own books. They learned how to write stories, create comics, design pop-ups and covers, and study examples from renowned Dutch artist Irma Boom. They also learned how to effectively present their ideas to an audience through book trailers. The process of conceptualising a book as a project is similar to that of an architect's work. We invite all to explore the various books here.

In the movie segment, students collaborated in groups to produce short films. Cinema, being an interdisciplinary form of artistic expression, serves as a great example of thinking like an architect by combining knowledge from different fields into a single project. Throughout nine lessons, 32 students aged 6 to 14 were introduced to the art of filmmaking. They participated in all aspects of production, including scriptwriting, costume and set design, stop-motion and shadow theater scenes, and creating movie credits and posters. Each student had the opportunity to explore various roles in the film industry, such as lighting technician, sound designer, and actor.

About

Founded by Alexander Novikov and Elena Karpilova, the Architectural Thinking School for Children is a project which works under the umbrella of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. This modular course, derived from a consolidated experience in Minsk, was launched in September 2022 in Portugal and sessions have been held at Palácio Sinel de Cordes since. The course covers migrant communities from various Eastern European countries that share a common language, since they belonged to the former Soviet Union, in addition to each country’s language. These communities have been growing significantly in the Portuguese capital.
