Walk & Talk, Mezzo Atelier © DR

Conversas et al. 2024

Talk Series

Emerging studios from all over Portugal are the focus of our talks on new approaches to architecture. A guest from outside the discipline joins the dialogue with the public in an intimate format, without introductions or moderation.

Every fortnight, an open and good-natured discussion reveals what makes their practices unique and shares first-hand pragmatic alternatives in a field where commissions are scarce and expectations are high.

3 October, 18h30
Mezzo Atelier + Jesse James, curator
Cultural Baggage

A travelling suitcase made of cryptomeria wood, created for a performance walk in São Miguel, sets the tone for the talk. This symbolic object introduces the many projects that the atelier has been developing for over a decade with the organisation of the Azorean art festival Walk&Talk, to reflect on the relationship between architecture and public space, communities, art and cultural programming.

17 October, 18h30
Branco del Rio + Nuno Pereira, client
Fiction as a Platform

With no physical form, the Idealista digital platform is a software, business, study and legal object. By aggregating huge amounts of constantly updated information, it has established itself as a common territory for those involved in the property market. Whether investing, specialising, giving technical advice, buying or simply being curious, those who use this tool create their own vision of the world. The distance from the material reality distorts the perception of what is seen and brings out other possibilities.

31 October, 18h30
KWY.studio + Manuel Amaral Netto, designer
Beginning, Middle and End

Straddling architecture, art and design, the multiple roles that KWY.studio plays are challenging, but always rich and exciting. This is also the case with their guest, a designer who reinvents the function of his pieces with unusual compositions.
This talk discusses different ways of collaborating, what intuitive or rational decisions are, the challenges of taking a project from start to finish, and how process and method are constantly adapting.
