Cities and Houses

Gonçalo M. Tavares

Curated by Gonçalo M. Tavares, this project brings together multiple perspectives on exclusion and inclusion in architecture. Through bibliographical and visual research, it demonstrates how both cities and houses embrace people and their differences to raise awareness of accessibility challenges or its total absence. Each year, the palace hosts an event incorporating contributions from experts in various fields to present an ongoing research on such a relevant topic for the Triennale.

Wednesday, December 6, at 18:30
Gonçalo M. Tavares,
Sara Falcão, and Catarina Branquinho

In this first talk, the Portuguese author shares testimonies on strategies for adapting the home environment to ageing gracefully and maintaining a high quality of life. A reflection is proposed on the autonomy and movement of the elderly body through concepts like memory space, memento, or traitor, which will become one of the chapters of the upcoming book.

The session includes an introduction to the project by Gonçalo M. Tavares, presenting programs from different parts of the world linked to the idea of a welcoming home. Following this, Sara Falcão and Catarina Branquinho, Psychomotricity professionals, discuss cognitive-functional architecture for the senior population. They explore how spatial adaptations require cognitive-functional changes and how psychomotor intervention can restore or maintain autonomy and bodily movement.

About

Over three years, "Cities and Houses" results from extensive research accompanied by the production of images and a diverse set of interviews with people whose journeys illustrate the themes. An audiovisual documentary piece is also created. 350 iconic literary works are revisited, highlighting authors that provide a selection as rich and eclectic as Marguerite Yourcenar, Voltaire, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Clarice Lispector, Paul Valéry, Ernesto de Sousa, Adélia Prado, as well as contemporary and classic philosophers such as Paul Virilio, Nietzsche, or Peter Sloterdijk.

The project involves a multidisciplinary team, including the artistic collective Os Espacialistas (architects Luís Baptista, Diogo Guimarães, and Sérgio Estevão), illustrator Rachel Caiano, journalist Rute Barbedo, filmmaker Larissa Lewandoski, and the design, sound, and image team from Alfabeto Padrão.
