Foodscapes

Spanish Pavilion at the 18th Venice Biennale

By Eating We Digest Territories

Every time we eat, we connect our plate to a plethora of remote sites: supermarkets, greenhouses, farms, cold chains, logistics networks, warehouses, and wastelands. However, the architectures that shape these unremarkable places rarely receive the attention they deserve, often going unnoticed despite their immense importance.

Foodscapes is a journey into the architectures that feed the world. Through an archive in the form of a Total Recipe Book and an audio visual feast of five short films, it delves into the agro-architectural context of the Iberian Peninsula, to survey the present landscape of our food systems and the architectures that sustain them. Created by interdisciplinary teams of architects and filmmakers, each film explores a different phase of the agrologistic process – from the domestic laboratories of our kitchens to the vast operational landscapes that nourish our cities:

  • Foundation – a film about microscopic plots under our feet, whose implications are macroscopic in scale and scope.
  • Production – an visual essay about the agricultural landscapes that feed our cities, and the architectures and dynamics that enable them to function.
  • Distribution – a documentary about between food and movement, revealing the complex interaction of our distribution systems with various infrastructural, economic, and technological forces.
  • Consumption – a music video that fuses traditional improvised singing with trap music, placing the kitchen as a space for social and political transformation.
  • Digestion – a short film about the invisible journey our food makes when we throw it away, revealing the complex entanglements of urban and ecological systems underpinning our daily lives.
