Festival Videoarte

For the fourth time, the Portuguese video art festival takes over the patio of Triennale's cultural centre for another outdoor soirée. The evening kicks off with a conversation between this night's curator, Greg de Cuir Jr., and curator Cristiana Tejo. It will be followed by short film screenings of works by the Kinopravda Institute (Serbia).

Night. Suburban area of the city of Tirana. A man holding a large rock in his hands appears in the dark street. As he walks, he repeatedly smashes the rock into the ground until the pieces become small enough to be easily picked up by other passersby and presumably used by them in an upcoming protest. He disappears into the darkness. On another street perhaps another man appears to be repeating the same action.

Doplgenger (Isidora Ilić + Boško Prostran), Serbia
Fragments Untitled #6, 2022, 6’
The two best football teams in Yugoslavia met at Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb on May 13, 1990. The match was never played. Fragments Untitled #6 vivisects media footage of the event. The video is part of an ongoing series of works which researches the politics of media images that participated in creating the historical narratives of Yugoslavia in the period of 1980-2000.

Igor Simić, Serbia
Cost-Benefit-Love, 2014, 10’
Two lovers, cost-benefit analysis and Rodin’s “The Kiss.” An exploration of Zygmunt Bauman’s idea of Liquid Love.

Vladislav Knežević, Croatia/Japan
End Cycle, 2017, 18’
Utterly reduced movability and tension of a physical body set in an abandoned factory plant. In an empty machine-less space a human body is attuned to the working rhythm of archaic pulsation. Slow and hyper-controlled movements are trying to maintain cohesion, but the decay of upper layers indicates the unstoppable process of dematerialisation. Body positions point to the collective memory of physical structure of things disappearing in the intense cold of calculus. The traumatic position of corporeality is denoted in a circular, unstoppable motion towards a data conversion of the material world. Most of the sound in the video was the result of interventions on a sound recording of breathing during the performance without the presence of an audience. Choreography and performance by Takao Kawaguchi. Co-produced by Saison Foundation, Japan.

"This particular selection for FUSO 2025 pays special regard to bodies and movement, in natural, urban and post-industrial spaces. These are political bodies in motion, in stasis, in frustrated or arrested development. Language is practically non-existent in these videos, as speech is perhaps inefficient as a method for liberating these bodies or even elucidating their social situations. When a modicum of discourse does suddenly appear it comes as abstract fragments heard from a public address system without a public. It unfolds as a stream of consciousness that captures a manic-depressive state of being in our solitary, hyper-transactional world. From stones to sports, from smartphones to structural decay, these works and these artists negotiate the materials and matters that condition reality. Or, as the poet Nas once wrote, “Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined.”"

*Greg de Cuir Jr is co-founder + artistic director of Kinopravda Institute in Belgrade.
