Common Field

On New Housing Models and Architecture without Status

The second event of Common Field series for 2020 is focused on collective housing, living together, and the potential of an architecture without status. It will include presentations by and Martino Tattara - co-founder of Brussels-based practice Dogma- and Roger Tudó -founding member of Catalan studio Harquitectes-. Both guests will introduce how their practices are both reflecting and challenging cultural and material standards, -offering alternative and straightforward models that can be enjoyed by the many- through a series of recent projects belonging to different programmes, and bearing diverse complexities and scales,: from social housing blocks in Mexico to the renovation of pre-existing buildings in Barcelona.

In English, this conference consists of a presentation and a conversation moderated by the curators of Common Field - Diana Menino and Felipe De Ferrari - in which we invite those who attend to participate and ask questions. Given the current pandemic context, the conference is held exclusively online, in live streaming format.

Biography

Dogma (Martino Tattara)
Martino Tattara is cofounder, with Pier Vittorio Aureli, of the Brussels-based architecture office Dogma. After graduating from the Università Iuav di Venezia, he obtained a postgraduate diploma at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and a PhD at the Università Iuav di Venezia, with a thesis on Lucio Costa’s project for Brasília. His theoretical and design work focuses on the relationship between architecture and large-scale urban design, and he has widely published and lectured on topics related to the city. He is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Harquitectes (Roger Tudó)
Roger Tudó is co-founder of the architectural studio Harquitectes, established in 2000 in Sabadell, Barcelona, with four partner architects: David Lorente Ibáñez, Josep Ricart Ulldemolins, Xavier Ros Majó and Roger Tudó Galí. All partners were licensed between 1998 and 2000 at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Vallès , where Josep and Roger teach Projects and Construction. Xavier also teaches Projects at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona. During the last decade, Harquitectes has been working on the relationship between energy, sustainability and building.

About Common Field

This lecture series takes architecture as a strategic attitude to space and resources. By adopting a critical and optimistic attitude, it can take on reality in radical ways, unveiling contradictions and potential, and developing projects that enable emancipatory ideas, thus building a common field. Such an approach can be conceived as a cumulative process of constant appropriation, imitation, repetition, translation, and re-contextualisation with open-minded thinking - embracing pragmatism and humour - based on the careful review of material reality and social conditions. Exploring these threads will lead us towards a collective form of construction.
Curated by Diana Menino and Felipe De Ferrari.
