Triennale 2019 exhibition journey from Lisbon to Lyon
Lyon’s Archipel Urban Cultural Centre, dedicated to the city and contemporary architecture, is welcoming Agriculture and Architecture: Taking the Country’s Side, premiered as part of the central programme of the Lisbon Triennale 2019, The Poetics of Reason. The exhibition curated by Sébastien Marot is on display from 2 June until 21 August 2022 at the Orangerie of Tête d’Or Park, one of the major urban green spaces in France, stretched along the Rhône River, on the opposite side of Vieux Lyon.
Agriculture and Architecture explores the relations between two complementary practices of domestication that started to grow together in the Neolithic Revolution but have been separated in modern times. In response to the current context of environmental awareness, Sébastien Marot, researcher and professor of Environmental History, invites to rethink the future of these two fields through a retrospective view on their fundamental conjunction, and question the rationality of design. If we look at the looming challenges, the process of the world’s urbanisation that seems inevitable could turn out at the same time impossible, explains the curator in the guided tour.
These vital reflections have attracted the attention of a varied audience, including professionals in architecture and urbanism, researchers, and younger visitors from schools of different academic levels. The Avery Review described the experience as “a container of sacred knowledge, in which the visitor mines existing stories for new meanings and coded messages”. Commissioned by the Lisbon Triennale for its 2019 edition in co-production with CCB – Garagem Sul, the exhibition illustrated by Gaëtan Amossé was accompanied by a series of debates and workshops as well as a publication. Agriculture and Architecture has also been shown at the Archizoom gallery, part of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), which was involved in the research process.
The Agriculture and Architecture journey is to be continued.
