Bugio is the name of the studio founded in 1980 by João Luis Sousa Menezes, graduated by ESBAL in 1970. Since 1988, the studio has been coordinated by João Favila Menezes, with co-authors Teresa Goes Ferreira, Filipe Luis Rosário, and, joining the team in 2003, Pedro Neves Mota. Among the studio’s projects stand out: the conversion of the fort Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Funchal (1994-1996), which received the annual award for restoration by the Portuguese Association of Municipalities and historic centres; the Quinta da Casa Branca, Funchal (1994-1998), received the municipal award for architecture of Funchal. Additionally, the studio took part in the 3rd Sintra Architecture Biennale, and in the exhibition Generation 90. The Quinta da Casa Branca was nominated for the Secil Prize and the Mies Van der Rohe award in 2001.
