The Palace hosts discussion on Quinta do Ferro’s rehabilitation

The Lisbon City Council is investing in the development of the preliminary urban model of the Intervention Unit of Quinta do Ferro, a neighbourhood located behind the Palácio Sinel de Cordes, between Graça and Santa Apolónia. This is an urban development where houses without living conditions and situations of illegal occupation are abundant.

As part of the Quinta do Ferro Systematic Urban Rehabilitation Operation, the Lisbon City Council has held a series of meetings with the population, namely neighbourhood residents and owners, and local associations. One of these meetings took place on 20 October 2022 at the Palácio Sinel de Cordes, where the Triennale is based, given our role in organising cultural initiatives and educational activities that seek to involve the local community and create bridges with our surroundings. Proposals and designs were presented to around 30 people, including neighbourhood residents, to launch an open discussion about urban solutions.

Quinta do Ferro is undergoing a global transformation operation by the City Council, which will integrate urban and environmental regeneration, the production of affordable housing, the requalification of public space and urban infrastructure, social development, a sense of community, and access to social rights. These intervention measures were presented by the City Council on 6 May 2022 to representatives of the Association of Owners and Residents Amigos da Quinta do Ferro; Cooperativa Trabalhar com os 99%; Parish Council of São Vicente; and Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, all of which were requested collaboration.

On 18 February, the municipality of Lisbon launched the first tender for the design of a municipal housing project with around 30 dwellings, located on Rua da Verónica, intended for rent (supported rents and affordable rents). This project aims to contribute to the rehousing of residents currently living in precarious circumstances and to constitute the first step in the renovation of the public space where it is located, with a positive social impact. It should be noted that the intervention has applied for funding within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, and is inspired by the values of the New European Bauhaus: environmental sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion.

The Triennale is very pleased to take part in the discussion of this territory’s future transformation, bringing together the various parties at the same table: governors, architects, and users. We hope that the Palace will keep hosting and organising meetings where perspectives are confronted, and we believe in the value this open debate brings to cities.
