Triennale takes part in Forum about the child and urban planning

The Child in the City International Seminar took place on 19 & 20 May 2022 at the Carcavelos Campus of Nova School of Business & Economics to present the latest knowledge and insights on involving children in mainstream urban planning policies. The Lisbon Triennale took part in the event with a poster session.

Local governments worldwide want their cities to become a child-friendly place based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), and this has been referenced in local policy documents. Progress has been made, but many cities still struggle with implementing children’s right to protection, privacy, and participation. This seminar aims to take further steps forward in both theoretically reflecting on these issues and implementing the convention in specific policy contexts.

During the two-day programme, co-organised by the Cascais City Council and the Child in the City Foundation, experts shared their experience and the latest projects, research and local case stories, from the opening  of schools to the city, to children’s safety and autonomy in the urban environment. Filipa Tomaz, Triennale’s Educational Service coordinator, presented an accessible tactile book about the house, which we are currently producing and promoting through a crowdfunding campaign. The presentation contributed to the forum by stressing the inclusive and universal access to what is the primary unit of a built environment - the house - and its connection to the surroundings and to nature.
