Triennale attends LINA conference to attract talent

Date
21 OCT 2022 - 22 OCT 2022
Location
Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana

On 21 and 22 October 2022, the Lisbon Triennale was present in Ljubljana for the LINA Conference 2022, the first public meeting of this new exchange platform that brought together 27 members and 25 emerging talents. The programme included a presentation of the 25 projects selected for LINA fellows, through an open call and also a group of speakers. The two days opened the road for the discussion and accompanying of the most recent developments and trends in architecture, with possible visions and revolutions for the future of the planet.

The LINA conference, which took place at the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture, focused on the power of architecture to co-create the future of the planet. There is now increasing agreement that the most sustainable form of construction is renovation with a high rate of reuse of existing materials, or their reuse as opposed to a policy of replacement by new constructions with new raw materials, which tend to occupy more and more previously empty spaces, contributing to the worsening of raw material shortage and the rising of property prices, as well as the climate and environmental crisis.

In this new cycle of exchange by professionals, which responds to the mission of a plural space, the Triennale is inviting two fellows to develop a project named Periple Duet. Always seeking to challenge established models, the Triennale is now investing on the creation of a on-the-move residence format, with the making of a territory-crossing itinerary in Europe, carried out through land transportation, which aims to provide a reflection on architecture, territory and borders, along with the geopolitical issues that the experience raises. Here the journey is the raw material for an exercise of observation, analysis and thinking, which results in a written, aural, visual or combined essay. Crossing borders, experiencing territorial diversity, reducing distances and extending limits are key elements addressed in a travel log as an essential tool for the continuous training of architects.

In parallel, the Triennale also intends to invite a member of the international network LINA to carry out what we called Take Over Exquis at Palácio Sinel de Cordes. The challenge is to occupy the space, team and budget of the Triennale during a specific period of time. The format of the activity, which is intended to take place yearly until 2026, is open and involves authors emerging from the aforementioned call.

Using a work-in-progress exhibition logic, a set of rules and an element are defined as a symbol of power transfer, which will be used as a starting point - and continuation - for this residency. For the handover, the first member then invites the next member with the same set of rules but adding a new element, as in a «cadavre exquis» exercise, for the next take over. Thus, in the next three years of the LINA cycle, the Palace’s programming will annually integrate international initiatives, crossing new voices of architecture with cultural agents from the platform.

LINA is a European architecture platform that connects agents in the field of architecture to emerging talents of thought and practice who have not yet had the opportunity to make a difference, but who bring concrete proposals on how architecture should evolve to fit into a regenerative and equitable future for everyone. LINA brings together 27 members and prominent institutions from across the EU and beyond. The programme is co-funded by the European Union and is the following of the Future Architecture platform.
