Founded in 1846 by royal decree by Queen Maria II, the Grémio Literário (Literary Guild or Society) was frequented by noteworthy Romanticism figures in Portugal, such as Alexandre Herculano and Almeida Garrett (two founding members), and 19th century Liberalism, such as Rodrigues Sampaio and Fontes Pereira de Melo. Active in cultural and social areas throughout its history, in 1912 it received the first Modernist exhibition, which included Almada Negreiros. In the 1960s, the beautiful garden, with its roof-covered veranda space and views of the River Tagus, was the object of a new landscape architecture design. Classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2021, the interior stands out for the eclectic spaces adapted to different activities, with styles and decorations from differing periods that are testament to the building’s history and Romantic past.
