This huge complex over 13 hectares has undergone major transformations over the last 150 years, a reflection of its own non-higher education programme with its unique and very particular characteristics. Finally occupying the former Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres hospital building in Luz, Lisbon, which was commissioned by the infanta, Princess Maria, the military school is home to buildings and external spaces that have distinct functions, are from different periods and have a diversity in terms of history. From the first adjustment to the cloisters, which correspond to the 17th-century building originally erected for hospital purposes, to the 18th-century palace, to the New State additions (in Portugal’s dictatorial regime) and to more recent conversions carried out in recent decades to welcome girls as pupils.
