Largo Residências – Largo do Cabeço de Bola Barracks

This huge complex of buildings has undergone numerous construction stages and has had many lives at the service of the National Republican Guard (GNR). At the end of the 19th century it worked as an office, then expanded with a garage, gym, changing rooms and dormitories. Between 1911 and 1950 it served as general workshops and in the following decade it housed offices, changing rooms and stables. Later it fulfilled a relevant housing function with the expansion of the barracks and the construction of housing for sergeants, canteen, butchery and warehouse. In 2015, the GNR activity in the space closed for good, and in 2020 the Lisbon urban plan was changed to integrate the complex into the National Fund for the Recovery of Buildings. In 2022 it was temporarily transferred to the cooperative Largo Residências, which opened its gates to the community, to carry out cultural activities for social inclusion and local development.
