Conserveira de Lisboa was founded in 1930 by Fernando da Silva Ferreira and is one of the city’s living icons of traditional commerce. Located on Rua dos Bacalhoeiros, the shop retains its original layout, with wooden counters and shelves brimming with colourful tins of sardines, tuna and mackerel, prepared using traditional methods by the brands Tricana, Prata do Mar and Minor. The shop is a treasure trove of culinary history, and archaeological remains of a Roman fish-salting and fermentation facility (cetariae) have even been discovered beneath it, bearing witness to the Roman industrial complex that once stretched along the riverfront from Casa do Bicos to the Baixa district of Lisbon.
