Fronteira Palace

  • Original Authors:
  • João Nunes Tinoco
  • (1670)

Located near the Monsanto Forest Park, the Fronteira Palace still retains the tranquillity and atmosphere of a 17th century pleasure farm. Despite being a National Monument and Museum, the Fronteira Palace is still inhabited by the descendants of Dom João de Mascarenhas, the 1st Marquis of Fronteira, who had the main body of the house built. The central part seems to be modelled on Italian Renaissance villas. The building is part of a single space that includes woods, orchards, vegetable gardens and a garden, the latter appearing as a stage set with a strong scenic effect due to the decorative impact of the tile cladding.
