With its modernist design, the former Xabregas Market was built in 1956 as a replacement for the previous market, whose building had been destroyed by a flood in 1945. Its thorough restoration defined a new language in architecture: concrete steps and ramp, steel mesh guards and painted steel sheet elements showcase the options for the intervention and the requalification of this space. Where frozen goods were supplied in the past, people presently engage in photography, painting, drawing, illustration, jewellery, cinema, history, and art theory. The recovery of this building is part of the transformation of the eastern area of Lisbon into an updated urban and cultural centre.
