About the Place
The market featured an orthogonal and symmetrical layout organised around two axes that defined access routes and sales areas. Stalls were distributed between central areas lit by skylights and peripheral areas with lower ceilings, while circulation took place beneath concrete vaults. Following a public tender by DIA in 2017, the market was adapted and underwent further refurbishment by Auchan Retail Portugal in 2025. This work adapted the original structure and highlighted the original materials, such as exposed concrete and Viúva Lamego tiles. The spatial and circulation layout was maintained, with the sales and preparation areas now occupying the former stall spaces and the mezzanine housing technical and support areas.
