The Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, together with the symmetrically positioned Church of Encarnação, is one of the fundamental elements in the spatial definition of Chiado. Both form one of the gateways to Lisbon, in the old Fernandina enclosure from the 14th century. After the 1755 earthquake, only the sacristy remained. The church we see today is a neoclassical-pombaline project, revealing the pragmatism of the style, based on an efficient and regular structure, where a remarkable work of wooden trusses allows the large single nave inside, well emphasised by the suspended ellipse of the architects Rebelo de Andrade, in an 2018 intervention. The urbanity of this building is clearly felt when you open the two entrance doors and see the city buzzing in a unique way.
