LX Factory

  • Original Authors:
  • João Pires da Fonte
  • (1849)

This complex, the first that Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense built from scratch after a fire consumed the initial unit in Xabregas, introduced in Lisbon the English model of fireproof factories with stone façades and iron structures. During the 20th century, it was also occupied by Companhia Industrial de Portugal e Colónias, the typography Anuário Comercial de Portugal, and Gráfica Mirandela. In this century, the temporary occupation of this 17,000 m2 area in advanced degradation determined a structuring approach to future uses and occupations through the import of a work-and-leisure blended model. The subtlety of the intervention in a completely transformed space balances expectations and meanings, through phased development with occasional demolitions, the reuse of existing elements and the appropriation of those who inhabit it.
