Located in an old part of the city traditionally dominated by small hardware and building material shops, the original building of the gallery underwent several significant transformations until the 1910 project that gave rise to the current façade and the configuration of the entrance and shop window, now the gallery, with its red iron ornamentation. The ground floor was originally a goldsmith’s shop and later a building materials shop, which also occupied the first floor, now part of the Galeria da Boavista. Lisbon City Council acquired the building in 2000, carried out improvements and, until 2016, made the space available to various organisations and cultural agents, who programmed it. In 2016, the Galeria da Boavista was incorporated into the Municipal Galleries/EGEAC group.
