About the Place
Inaugurated in 1960, the grounds of the German School of Lisbon were designed by Otto Bartning, co-author of the Bauhaus teaching project, with landscaping by Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles. Over the years, the space has undergone several updates, most notably in 2008 and 2023, designed by the Carrilho da Graça studio. The 2008 intervention involved the construction of two new buildings and the renovation of the existing ones, while the 2023 intervention involved the construction of an innovative new building. In both interventions, the search for a harmonious dialogue between different periods and materials is evident, reinterpreting the modern principles of the original project, respecting it without sacralising it, and enriching the experience and habitability of the space. Founded in 1848, the school currently welcomes 1100 students of 30 nationalities.
