Founded in the late 1970s, the Diferença Cooperative occupied the first floor of this (anti-seismic) “cage”-method residential building in which Sarah Afonso and Almada Negreiros had lived. A landmark in contemporary Portuguese art, the initial nucleus, formed around Alternativa Zero set up by the artist Ernesto de Sousa, included Helena Almeida, Irene Buarque and António Palolo, to name just a few. They were quickly joined by other artists, such as Alberto Carneiro, Julião Sarmento, Ana Vieira, Eduardo Nery, Artur Rosa and Nuno Teotónio Pereira. In the 1980s, a new glassed gallery space occupied the backyard space, for which there were several possible uses depending on the artistic activity. Permeability in terms of the exterior was always a strong point, as was integration of the pre-existing trees.
