Located in Avenidas Novas, this building’s great nobility and elegance offers undeniable relevance to the highly awarded rehabilitation project standing on the corner between Avenida da República and Avenida Miguel Bombarda. The old facades and interiors were restored to protect the original identity, highlighting the fully recovered wooden floors, and underlining the painted and decorated ceilings. Each home unit underwent a profound typological change to increase the number of flats in the building, complemented by a structural reinforcement and the insertion of fireproofing elements between floors. On Avenida Miguel Bombarda’s side, the project features a new construction erected in the additional space between buildings. This new volume shows a contemporary design, in a tense relationship that reveals a dialogue with the original steel and glass closed balconies. The connection between the two bodies is made through a recessed built volume, detached from the ground floor, defining the horizontal communications between both sides of the ensemble.
