The history of the Pombaline post-earthquake reconstruction is engraved in the very foundations of the buildings, and this old warehouse’s renovation is such an example. During the restoration works, this English inscription was rediscovered in the lime stucco, close to the vaults: “Goods were placed in this warehouse for the first time on 10 July 1799”. 44 years after the earthquake, the date immortalizes the moment of the city’s complete rebirth. The strength of the foundations also testifies how spatial and constructive clarity guarantees its versatility over the centuries. Taking advantage of the direct relationship with the street, this is now an architecture studio and a stage for artistic interventions, the Porta 14 project, which has already welcomed more than 40 artists.
