Building in Rua do Quelhas

  • Interventions:
  • Carrilho da Graça Arquitectos
  • (2006 reabilitação)

This rehabilitation project of an existing building corresponds to a reconfiguration creating two autonomous dwellings: one on the first floor and the other, the owners’ home, on the two upper floors. The ground level comprises a generous garage space and other support areas. With a splendid view over the Tagus mouth, the design approach sought a balance between the flats’ interiors and their respective exterior spaces, which work as viewpoints. One central goal was to reach an equilibrium between enjoying the city and its landscape and the desirable privacy and protection of the interior living spaces. The two flats are independent, each with its own outdoor space, on distinct levels. Over these levels, the house compartments develop, open to the city and the river but marked by the well-cherished privacy.
