About the Place
The refurbishment of this 1960s building reorganised the stalls and shops, introduced a floor featuring a shopping arcade connected to a terrace with urban gardens and outdoor dining areas, and incorporated a covered atrium to strengthen the link with the neighbourhood. The intervention preserved the main stone and masonry walls (reinforced and clad with traditional materials) and demolished some more recent structures to restore the original inner courtyard, raise the ceiling height and improve natural light and ventilation. The construction strategy combined refurbishing the existing structure with introducing new, lightweight, sustainable timber, polycarbonate and heat-treated slat elements, with the new timber and metal roof acting as a unifying feature.
