About the Place
The former Convent of the Trinas do Mocambo now houses the Portuguese Navy Hydrographic Institute, a state laboratory. Situated on a picturesque hillside overlooking the Tagus, it is located in an area that was once known as the Mocambo district. Originally a strictly observant and cloistered convent dedicated to the Order of the Holy Trinity, it was founded in 1657 by D. Luísa de Gusmão, who supported and authorised its establishment, as well as by a couple of Dutch Catholic emigrants and the House of Cadaval. The convent’s rich collection of tiles includes standout pieces in the form of individual figures that cover the entire kitchen.
