About the Place
This Social Support Centre run by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa offers a range of temporary services designed to support the integration of people facing social exclusion, such as those who have experienced homelessness. Housed in a former Cozinha Económica (soup kitchen), it was originally an initiative of the Sociedade Protectora das Cozinhas Económicas de Lisboa, a philanthropic institution that operated from 1892 until its dissolution in 1910. The soup kitchens were then transferred to Misericórdia de Lisboa in 1911. Their aim was to “provide healthy, clean and plentiful food for the working classes and the less well-off”. CASSB comprises a cooking workshop and two art studios where artists work with materials as diverse as paper pulp, wood and the whole range of recyclable materials.
