Quartéis House

In the Ajuda neighbourhood, you can find a four-storey house for a family of five. The house replaced a two-storey small building with two flats, whose state of degradation and poor construction quality justified its demolition. The corner position and white facades highlight its volumetry. The main facade’s regular shapes and the proportion of its windows are attributes that converge with the oldest buildings in the street, while the windows of the side facade show a distinct contemporary composition. Around it, there are other recent buildings, but none has the same type of architectural relevance. Thus, the house comprises a duality of integration and differentiation. Inside, the space is organised in such a way that it reinforces the contemporary feel. For this family, it was a challenge to fit the necessary spaces into the available area, favouring the upper floors – light, views, and privacy. The middle floors are the heart of the house, the ground floor works as a support area, and the top floor is a social and entertainment area.
