The institute’s mission is to implement the Portuguese cooperation policy and to promote the teaching and dissemination of the Portuguese language and culture abroad. It is located in the Palacete Seixas, built at the beginning of the 20th century under the influence of the romantic architecture of the French School. Today, the palace is the only building to have survived the redevelopment of Marquês de Pombal Square, designed by the architect and town planner Carlos Ramos. Originally a family residence, it was acquired by Carlos Seixas in 1908, and after a succession of owners and a serious fire in 1989, it was declared a National Heritage Site. In the same year it became state property, and in 1997 it became the headquarters of the Camões Institute, which in 2012 merged with the Portuguese Institute for Development Support, giving origin to the Camões – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I.P.
