A Duplex in Areeiro Tower

  • Original Authors:
  • Luís Cristino da Silva
  • (1948)

  • Interventions:
  • Filipa Junqueira
  • (2012)

This house/apartment is on the uppermost floor of one of the Praça do Areeiro buildings, a Lisbon landmark from the New State dictatorial period. The intervention lives, above all, from the new spatial links between the original apartment and two previously unused spaces: the attic, in one of the towers that define the upper levels of the square that had originally been designed as a symbolic element; and the terrace, the appropriation potential of which was a recent discovery. The attic was turned into a living room defined by the wooden structure supporting the roof that now leads to a re-designed large terrace, along the whole length of the apartment, providing views along the Avenida Almirante Reis valley as far as the River Tagus.
