It’s the city’s first scratch-built major luxury hotel. The Ritz towers over Lisbon at the top of one of its main avenues, with a privileged view of the Tagus River. It’s a political project, proposed by the government, which wanted a luxury unit in the capital with all the requirements of modern hotels, which didn’t exist. Designed by Pardal Monteiro in collaboration with Jorge Ferreira Chaves, it is one of the most important projects of Portuguese modernist architecture, governed by the principle of functional organisation. It is worth noting the extensive collection of works by Portuguese artists such as Almada Negreiros, Jorge Vieira, Querubim Lapa, Sarah Affonso and Carlos Botelho. This hotel is a model of conservation and updating of an active classified property and is still a great reference in the capital.
