Ritz Hotel

  • Original Authors:
  • Porfírio Pardal Monteiro
  • (1959)

As the first scratch-built big luxury hotel in the city, the Ritz Hotel towers over Lisbon at the top of one of its main avenues with a privileged river view. It is a political project, suggested by the government, which wanted a luxury unit in the capital city with all the requirements of modern hotels, nonexistent until then. Designed by Pardal Monteiro in collaboration with Jorge Ferreira Chaves, it is one of the most important projects of Portuguese modernist architecture, governed by the principle of functional organisation. It is worth noting the extensive collection of works of art by Portuguese artists such as Almada Negreiros, Jorge Vieira, Querubim Lapa, Sarah Affonso, or Carlos Botelho. The Ritz is a model of conservation and updating of active classified property, and is still a great reference of luxury accommodation in Lisbon.
