The São João de Deus low-cost housing neighbourhood is a landmark development in the Portuguese Modern movement of the 1950s. However, the elevations of this building, which is characterised by permeability between the interior and exterior, have been devalued over time by alterations such as closed balconies, metal sheeting on top-floor balconies and the removal of the concrete grids in kitchens. The renovation of this duplex apartment reinstated the original elements and made slight adaptations to the interior in response to the demands of contemporary private life. The kitchen was modernised, the staircase redesigned, the wooden flooring was recovered and extended to the whole dwelling, a bathroom was added to the reception level and that in the bedroom level was divided into two.
