Built as early as 1746, this space begins at Casa do Registo, next to the Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras Reservoir, and ends at Largo do Directório, next to Teatro de São Carlos. This gallery is one of the few that remain in good condition out of the five that made up the Águas Livres Aqueduct system. It’s 2835 meters long, completely underground, and supplies some public buildings such as the Imprensa Nacional, Passeio Público, Misericórdia, Recolhimento e Passeio de S. Pedro de Alcântara, and Quartel da Guarda Municipal do Carmo, as well as fountains, such as the ones in São Pedro de Alcântara, Século, Praça da Alegria, Carmo, and Loreto. Its good state of preservation allows our imagination to discern or reconstruct the enormous original complex.
