Galeria Subterrânea do Loreto – Museu da Água

  • Original Authors:
  • Carlos Mardel
  • (1746)

This gallery is one of the few that remain in good condition, out of the five ones that made up the Águas Livres Aqueduct system. Its length of 2835 metres was fully underground, including all branches, and supplied some public establishments such as Imprensa Nacional, Passeio Público, Misericórdia, Recolhimento e Passeio de S. Pedro de Alcântara, and Quartel da Guarda Municipal do Carmo, as well as fountains, such as the ones in São Pedro de Alcântara, Século, Praça da Alegria, Carmo and Loreto. It is a unique space, built as early as 1746, which begins at Casa do Registo, next to the Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras Reservoir, and ends at Largo do Directório, next to Teatro de São Carlos. Its good condition allows our imagination to discern or reconstruct the enormous original complex.
