The building is the third of the six Pombaline blocks on the northeast side of Praça do Comércio, built after the 1755 earthquake on the site of the former Terreiro do Paço, to a design by Eugénio dos Santos. It forms part of the ministerial complex around the square, whose architecture is characterised by the rhythm created by the repetition of the arcades. Mouzinho da Silveira was the main architect of the organisation of the judiciary and the Supreme Court, which began operating in 1833 and was housed in this palace. It is remarkable that, unlike other ministries and public institutions, the Supreme Court of Justice has remained in the same location for almost 200 years.
