Surrounded by a high wall and a dense curtain of cedar trees, the English Cemetery stands out for its mysticism, in one of the most central areas of the city, next to the Basilica and Jardim da Estrela. It originated in the 1654 treaty between Portugal and England, in which King João IV promised to respect the religion of the British community within the borders. Over the centuries, the cemetery’s boundaries have been redefined, particularly with the opening of Avenida Álvares Cabral and the subsequent design of Rua de São Jorge. Inside, St George’s Church stands out, a Victorian-style building that has remained a place of worship since its construction in 1889, after a fire destroyed the previous one dating from 1822. Today, the cemetery, although it admits several nationalities, is still owned by the English Crown.
