Originally located in Campo das Cebolas (formerly Ribeira Velha), it moved to its current location in 1771 as part of the market network established by the Marquis of Pombal, after which it became known as Ribeira Nova. After spending decades in temporary structures, the current building was inaugurated in 1882. It was partially destroyed by a fire in 1893 and extended until 1930, when it gained the tiled dome that earned it the nickname ‘Mesquita do Nabo’. Until the opening of MARL in 2000, the wholesale fresh produce market operated here. Since then, it has been organised into a food court (licensed to Time Out Market), a flower market, and a fresh produce market with underground facilities. Spanning around 10,000 m² and boasting an exposed metal structure, the market successfully combines industrial character with historical value.
