In the 20th century, the construction of the former National Coach Museum began the process of resignifying Lisbon’s monumental area. The construction of the Belém Cultural Centre was decided at the beginning of 1988 to host the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union in 1992. The building overlooks Praça do Império on the west side and offers the city a range of auditoriums, conference rooms, shops and more. Today, the Museum of Contemporary Art houses the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, the Holma/Ellipse Collection, the Berardo Collection and some state works. The Architecture Centre has renovated the space of the South Garage – a project by Bureau studio – and allows it not only to host exhibitions, but also to be used as a workplace, for programming or social events.
