Bairro Padre Cruz

In 2009, the City Council launched a redevelopment plan for the various types of accommodation built here since 1959. Financed by the PIPARU (programme for priority investment in urban renovation actions), the pilot-test block partially replaced a group of houses in advanced degradation. On a slight slope, twenty houses of different types were designed with direct access from the lowest and highest areas, and via stairs. The autonomous units are organised in a dynamic set that fragments the scale of collective housing. There are no interior common areas, but infrastructure and exterior accesses are shared. The different volumes and interstitial spaces are integrated by the standardisation of building solutions, such as the ceramic coating that determines the proportions of the group and openings. Given the project’s success, a second stage is already under construction.
