About the Place
Built on the site of an old Manueline chapel, this iconic church is the work of architect Afonso Álvares, but the roof and old Mannerist façade were designed by the Italian Filippo Terzi. A prototype for Portuguese Jesuit churches, it belonged to the Society of Jesus before it was donated to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia charity in 1768 after the Jesuits were expelled from Portugal. Featuring a single nave with interlinked side chapels, the church’s interior is richly decorated in a Baroque style with gilt woodcarving, paintings, azulejo tiles and marble elements.
