Assisted Walkway from Baixa district to Castelo de São Jorge

  • Original Authors:

Negotiating the hills and slopes of Lisbon – climbing uphill and going downhill – can be a veritable “cross-country” experience. For a long time now the city has used mechanical means to make certain urban itineraries easier. Awarded the FAD 2014 Prize, this pedestrian course connecting Lisbon’s Baixa district and its castle, brings together in one building the public lifts, private housing and the local Parish Council offices. The previous flooring was replaced by slabs of Lioz limestone with a matte honed finish, adding a level of comfort and becoming a leitmotif for the whole project.
