The long history of this school dates back to the São Vicente Branch of the Liceu Passos Manuel, established in the former Bishop’s Palace of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora. In 1915, it became the Liceu Central de Gil Vicente, the first secondary school established by the Republic. Since 1949, it has been housed in a purpose-built building on Rua da Verónica, next to the Fernandine Wall. The original complex is organised around two blocks of classrooms linked by a central wing with arcades, forming an internal courtyard; the entrance, with its monumental staircase and formal elements characteristic of the Estado Novo, is also noteworthy. The refurbishment incorporates a new hub that links the teaching spaces, communal areas and sports facilities, serving as the main distribution point. This was also the first state school to establish an agroforestry scheme.
