Rehabilitation in Alfama

  • Interventions:
  • Can Ran
  • (2013 reabilitação)

This small apartment located on the top floor of a building in Alfama, originally very fragmented and with problems concerning its interior distribution, was redesigned in order to open up the space, rearranging the way it is inhabited. From the floor emerge two volumes and two colours that contain and generate the different functions; it is around them that the whole programme is articulated. The orange volume, simultaneously a bed and a closet, was placed at the centre of the space, generating the living room and the bedroom, while also allowing for the existence of two work desks, a dressing area, a second bed and storage. Without ever losing its unity, this volume enables the separation of the various functions, creating different privacies. The blue volume is configured through a corridor that leads to the kitchen and the toilet, assuring communication with the terrace. This exterior area is a metaphor for the intervention itself, which is established in the fortuitous dialogue between the dense urban tissue of Alfama and the openness of the river and the sky.
