Alameda Monumental Fountain

This fountain was inaugurated to celebrate the regular supply of water to the eastern area of the capital and the triple centennial of the foundation and restoration of Portugal. It finishes the space of the promenade that articulates distinct moments of urban expansion: to the South, lots and multi-family buildings around Avenida Almirante Reis, in the first half of the 20th century; and to the North, towards Avenida de Roma and the Alvalade Plan, in the second half of the 20th century. This space resolves the original topography and gives urban continuity to the East through a viewpoint overlooking Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques. It is composed of a semi-circular lake where allegorical figures emerge, receiving water from thirteen spouts cascaded through three dischargers. Several sculptors intervened in this complex of monumental construction, form and scale, including the two lateral bodies, whose bas-reliefs have been losing their original polychromatic colour scheme. The visit goes through the entrance to the machinery galleries to understand the technical infrastructure needed for one of the largest artificial waterfalls in Europe.
