About the Place
Responding to a challenge from bartender Constança Cordeiro, XXXI Studio created a performative bar around a ceremonial counter in a tiny shop on Rua do Século. The project contrasts the futuristic universes of Dennis Villeneuve and Stanley Kubrick with the nuances of light present in Japanese cinematic imagery. In the pre-existing space, a room with a low ceiling and only one door to the street, the point was to create a skin that would break with the limited scale of the space and dematerialize its surroundings. At the centre is a ceremonial counter, like a moon rock cut horizontally, allowing its interior to be seen as a mirror – like a cut into the void. The ceiling suggests the entry of natural light, soft and diffused, through a contemporary “stained-glass”, in tensioned canvas by the artist Manuel Tainha.
