The façade of this significant example of Lisbon’s Modernist architecture, listed as a Building of Public Interest since 1983, is distinguished by its simple surfaces, the interplay of vertical and horizontal lines, and the striking bow window, flanked by pillars topped with iron and glass pinnacles. The building is rectangular in plan and comprises two storeys. It was constructed on the site of the former Real Coliseu de Lisboa (1887–1925), a theatre-circus where opera, theatre and cinema performances were held. Recent archaeological surveys have revealed remains of this structure, including part of the arena’s ring, seating fittings, preserved timber, and painted stucco areas. The building has been fully restored through its conversion into a supermarket.
