Casa das Galeotas – Casa da América Latina and UCCLA

  • Interventions:
  • Appleton & Domingos arquitectos
  • (2016 reabilitação)

This 18th-century building was a warehouse for the royal brigantines and galleys, hence the name ‘House of Galleys’. The project for hosting two distinct institutions, the headquarters of Casa da América Latina and UCCLA (Union of the Portuguese-speaking Capital Cities), gave unity to a set of neighbouring buildings that expanded over time: an 18th-century warehouse, a 19th-century building and another one from the early 20th century. Organised around a central garden, it includes a cafeteria and an exhibition area with an auditorium. The tile cladding designed by Can Ran studio is noteworthy. This reinterpretation takes the existing tile pattern from the 19th century and breaks it down into various elements, resulting in a progression between the lower and upper edges. The tiling subtly makes the façade stand out from the surroundings, highlighting the uniqueness of this building.
