The Trafaria Oil Terminal was built in the 1960s by the then Esso Standard Portuguesa and started operations in 1966. The station was designed and supervised by several engineering experts, but in addition had a landscape project by Francisco Caldeira Cabral. The Terminal was placed on the north slope of the Quinta dos Buxos and although it was designed to collect fuel and prepare lubricants, in 1970 also stowed LPG (butane and propane) and had a gas bottle filling station. During its nearly 55 years of operation the Terminal underwent successive upgrades to improve the security and environmental protection conditions. From 1970 on, the station was only used for storage. It is owned by OZ Energia since 2009 and currently undergoes a project of expansion of its gas storage capacity. This phase started in 2015 with the preliminary studies followed by an Environmental Impact Study submitted to the competent authorities. The new construction began in 2020 and is expected to be completed in early 2022.
